The 1st International Workshop on Biomass for Biofuels 2017

09 Agustus 2017

INTRODUCTION Climate change is one of the most serious environmental problem due to increasing human population, activities and large scale exploitation of fossil energy resource that increasing accumulation of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. Concentrations of greenhouse gas (CO2) in the atmosphere will continue rising unless major changes are made in the way fossil fuels are used to provide energy services. Many research and development has been undertaken to assess the possible contribution of alternative energy resources to the future global energy supply. Biomass has the potential to become one of the major global primary energy sources during the next century, and modernized bioenergy systems are suggested to be important contributors to future sustainable energy systems and to sustainable development in industrialized countries as well as in developing countries. Biomass as a renewable resource is considered to be the raw material for sustainable production of energy and chemicals, such as wood pellet, briquettes, bioethanol, bio-oil, bio-avtur and biodiesel. The source of biomass are dedicated energy crops and agro-industrial waste that are abundant, inexpensive, renewable and provides a unique natural resource for large-scale and cost-effective bio-energy collection.Indonesia has a wide range of arable land and forestry supplying enough lignocellulose as the future energy resources, that the country increasingly regards its biomass as a promising potential energy source in order to maintain the environmental sustainability. The source of biomass energy and chemicals is scattered all over the country with big potentials on large scale in areas of Kalimantan, Sumatra, Papua and Sulawesi. Currently, the pressure of cost savings and business competitiveness among the most important biomass-based industries of Indonesia demands from the scientists new technologies to convert the country's biomass to value-added biofuels and chemicals. Also, the government has been recognized biofuels produced from the 2nd and 3rd generation technology as essential element for the sensible energy mix policy in the future. The scientific workshop on biomass towards sustainable energy would be a pioneering example in solving the upcoming environmental sustainability and human energy demands by sharing technology, natural resources and moreover global cooperation.Research Center for Chemistry – Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) will hold the 1st International Workshop on Biomass for Biofuels (IWBB) 2017. This event will be held on October 19-20, 2017 at DRN Building, PUSPIPTEK-Serpong, Tangerang Selatan, Indonesia. The theme of this year is "Future Prospective of Biomass towards Sustainable Energy". This workshop will demonstrate some cooperative achievements in constructing a pilot plant and testing the production of bioethanol using lignocellulosic biomass. It will be continuous efforts to focus more on biomass-based biofuels and their large scale production.   OBJECTIVES & THEMES ObjectivesThe International workshop on Biomass for Biofuels 2017 focuses on accelerating research on biomass-based biofuels production on large scale, and aims at bringing together recognized experts and representatives in bioenergy development and production, environment, agriculture, energy policy, alternative energy, economics, etc. so as to accelerate the research on large scale bioethanol production. The information, opinions and insights presented in the workshop would build a road-map outlining the future research and educational backbone necessary to begin and accomplish the biomass resources development and their utilization in Indonesia. A pilot plant constructed in Research Center for Chemistry, Serpong, would be disclosed with the research results obtained from it on the production of pure bioethanol using lignocellulosic biomass empty fruit bunch (EFB). The workshop would also help in building a solid scientific research relationship between academicians and industries, in addition holding the future environmental and energy issues in common. Finally, the workshop would be a means to proclaim the importance of the environment preservation to the public.ThemeThe theme of this workshop is “Future Prospective of Biomass towards Sustainable Energy”. The outcome of this workshop will be to take information and insights presented by all keynote speakers that outline all key utilization of the biomass, future prospect of the biomass for biofuels, current status of the biofuels technology, and regulatory and government-related issues. KEYNOTE SPEAKERS Prof. Mohammad J.Taherzadeh, University of Boras, Sweden Prof. Yutaka Takashimada, Hiroshima University, Japan Dr. Paripok Phitsuwan, King Mongkutt University, Thailand Ir. Rida Mulyana, M.Sc., Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resource, Indonesia Dr. Isroi, Indonesian Research Institute for Biotechnology and Bioindustry, Indonesia Dr. Haznan Abimanyu, Research Center for Chemistry-LIPI, Indonesia Dr. Dieni Mansur, Research Center for Chemistry-LIPI, Indonesia SCOPE The workshop subjects presented in this event are including, but not limited to, raw material, technology process & application of biofuels such as: Bioethanol Biodiesel Bio-oil Bioavtur
